The Teachings of our Elders: Democracy and Civil Discourse

Tribal nations had strong traditions of diplomacy, civil discourse, persuasive speaking. These practices were noted by Benjamin Franklin and other leaders as they framed the Constitution. This session will examine some of these early practices and how we can use them in our contemporary world.

Upon completion of this session, participants will:

  • Understand the cultural worldview that influences Native humor
  • Understand the nuances of humor in building relationships
  • Navigate interpersonal relationships through cultural awareness

Who should attend: Mental health professionals, social workers, addiction counselors, residential treatment professionals, youth group home professionals, juvenile justice professionals, school counselors, service providers, non-profit leaders, and others.

Refreshments and a light lunch will be provided.

The Cultural Competency Workshop Series is a service of SPRC for professionals in the Bismarck-Mandan area working with and in American Indian populations. CEUs are provided where possible.
