Cultural Competency Workshop: Reaching and Teaching Native Youth

August 18, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 12:30 pm

Beyond the Classroom: Reaching and Teaching Native Youth

This session explores the long-standing cultural conflicts in the education system that impedes student-teacher and parent-teacher relationships, impacts classroom management, and inhibits Native learning. A set of concrete strategies that can help connect with Native students for more effective learning and help build co-teaching partnerships with parents is provided.

Upon completion of this session, participants will:

  • Understand the historical cultural conflicts in education that impact today’s students and parents;
  • Articulate the cultural values that resonate with Native students;
  • Identify some concrete classroom strategies to connect with Native students and parents.

Who should attend: Teachers, Principals, School Administrators, classroom paraprofessionals, non-profit professionals working in Indian education, and others interested in learning more about the diversity in our classrooms.

The cost is $50 to attend. Please visit the Registration page to sign up and for payment details. We are now able to accept payments online! Please be registered by COB August 14.

Refreshments and a light lunch will be provided.

The Cultural Competency Workshop Series is a service of SPRC for professionals in the Bismarck-Mandan area working with and in American Indian populations. CEUs are provided where possible.
