Woman models black gown with floral appliqués

Come hear Darlene Perkins, owner of Red Lightning Couture (Parshall, ND), discuss her process for designing Native-based fashion. This event is a program of the Thuswecha Beading & Cultural Academy, and is open to the public to show other young people the beauty and success attainable in Native fashion. Everyone is welcome!

Darlene has created a unique blend of fashion steeped in her rich Native culture and history with Red Lighting Couture, which specializes in wearable quillwork and appliqué. Darlene’s father was a proud descendant of Arikara and Hidatsa ancestry and her mother was an Oglala/Lakota from Kyle, SD, on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Her work is inspired by the rich history of Native American visionaries, elders, leaders, inter-tribal celebrations, artists and modern fashion.

The Thuswecha Beading & Cultural Academy is a program for youth (ages 10-17) to learn Native beading techniques and designs, with the goal of designing and beading a dance outfit. The program includes cultural presentations about beadwork, dance, songs, and participating in a wacipi.
