Welcome to SPRC

A Center for Community Engagement

Welcome to the Sacred Pipe Resource Center. We are a Native-led community-serving organization committed to the mission of engaging the urban Tribal Native American population by providing safe spaces in which they can connect with each other, build community, and affect positive change. We hope to serve as a home-away-from-home and help strengthen cultural, spiritual, social, and community knowledge for all Tribal members living here in our homelands.

Our work centers around our Community Councils and the engagement they provide. Each Community Council addresses key issues in the Bismarck-Mandan-Lincoln area that have an impact on our well-being and quality of life as Indigenous people. We seek to impact lasting and meaningful change in key areas such as housing, physical health, mental and emotional wellness, civic responsibility, youth support, and the arts, all through the lens of healing and social and economic justice.

We invite you to join us as we seek to transform the trauma of our past to the healing-centered engagement of our future.

Our community councils empower change at the local level by addressing key issues. Join us in making a positive impact in our community by actively engaging with our dedicated community councils and driving meaningful change that directly impacts the lives of our neighbors.

Arts
The Arts Council plans and engages in activities that connect cultural arts with social justice. SPRC has an Artist-in-Residence who leads arts learning and activities for all ages that focus on making our community a more equitable place.

Civic Engagement
The Civic Engagement Council works on encouraging Native community members to learn about the systems that impact them and how they can raise their voices to have input and hold elected leaders accountable. Issues taken up by this Council include protecting Native voting rights, encouraging voting, and learning about civic systems such as the Census, redistricting, the legislative process, and elections.

Health
The Health Council focuses on the physical health and well-being of Native community members. This Council sponsors programs that create opportunities to get health coverage, educational opportunities to learn about managing your own health, and provides events designed to help Native community members participate in activities – such as providing free sports physicals for youth so they can participate in organized sports.

Housing
The Housing Council organizes around critical housing issues. With housing being a major crisis for the Native population in this community, the Housing Council seeks to impact changes to make affordable housing more accessible. The Council does this through activities, events, and awareness. The Housing Council also seeks to add voices to the effort through the recruitment of Native people and allies to the Tenants Rights Association.

Native Youth
Burleigh County is the county in North Dakota with a long-standing pattern of having the highest rate of Disproportionate Minority Contacts (DMC) among Native youth. To address this, the Juvenile Justice Council seeks to help families understand the juvenile justice system and to provide positive activities for Native youth.

Wellness
The Wellness Council focuses on mental health and revitalizing Native traditions of wellness. The Wellness Council supports activities that prevent suicide, depression, and anxiety. Positive cultural events and specific strategies for seeking to prevent suicide are the major topics of this Council.
