On January 26, 2017, Thuswecha Beading & Cultural Academy will be hosting a presentation by designer and artist Darlene Perkins, owner of Red Lightning Couture in Parshall, ND. Darlene is a great example of the beauty and success attainable in Native fashion. She will be discussing her process for designing Native-based fashion and art.
Red Lighting Couture specializes in wearable quillwork and appliqué. Darlene has created a unique blend of fashion that draws on her rich Native culture and history. Her father was a proud descendant of Arikara and Hidatsa ancestry and her mother was an Oglala/Lakota from Kyle, SD, on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Darlene’s work is inspired by the rich history of Native American visionaries, elders, leaders, inter-tribal celebrations, artists, and by modern fashion.
This presentation is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome!
The Thuswecha Beading & Cultural Academy is a program for youth (ages 10-17) to learn Native beading techniques and designs, with the goal of designing and beading a dance outfit. The program includes cultural presentations about beadwork, dance, songs, and participating in a wacipi.
