We hope you will join us for this month’s Cultural Competency Workshop Series. This session, Native American Parenting, will examine traditional Native parenting practices and worldviews that influence child-rearing. The session will discuss the cultural meanings that support practice, the historical breakdowns that occurred in some practices, and how to help parents reclaim good parenting skills.
Notions of good child-rearing practices vary widely and often cause tension when they differ in issues such as discipline. Research shows that beliefs about childrearing are adopted from one’s culture of origin and are often resistant to change.
Upon completion of this session, participants will:
- Understand some of the common historical and contemporary parenting practices utilized in Tribal communities
- Recognize the cultural underpinnings for those practices
- Be able to connect current research to traditional practice to support and promote positive parenting in Native families
Who should attend: Social workers, guardian ad litems, ICWA workers, youth advocates, mental health professionals, family counselors, addiction professionals, domestic violence advocates, public health professionals, teachers and guidance counselors, community non-profit leaders.
